Non-compliant hazmat storage creates a ‘house of cards’ in California storage mishap

compliant chemical storage
A house is not a home and neither is it a viable solution for compliant hazmat storage. While resourcefulness in minimizing overhead engender feelings of financial stability in most organizations, thriftiness can become a detriment. A San Diego company recently learned the drawbacks of cutting corners after being fined $150,000 for storing hazardous waste at three local homes, including a mansion.

In that plea, the company admitted it had been conducting metal finishing operations at its location on Sorrento Valley Road, which created various wastes including ferric chloride, alkaline, waste filter cake, solvents, and other hazardous materials, investigators said. Over the course of nearly four years, those hazardous waste materials were illegally moved from the company’s Sorrento Valley Road facility to three homes owned by the CTI’s owner, including the La Jolla mansion on Wrelton Drive, where the waste had to be detonated by officials last fall.

Fire-rated hazmat storage lockers can help your company stay compliant

hazmat storage

The recent storage fiasco in southern California could’ve been easily avoided with a little bit of planning and foresight. While we are not privy to details of the company’s day-to-day operations, it appears they went to great lengths to move material away from their processing facilities. Transporting hazardous waste and dangerous chemicals off-site poses a completely new set of challenges and protocols. Hazardous waste is inherently toxic and can damage any company’s finished product. We understand why any business would want to move hazardous waste and dangerous chemicals away from the processing facilities as soon as possible. It should go without saying that a residential area is the last place you should consider storing hazardous waste. To avoid the perils of improper storage, consider a fire-rated U.S. Hazmat Storage building.

Chemical storage lockers can separate hazardous waste from vulnerable products, equipment

Hazardous waste doesn’t belong near equipment, finished goods and especially employees. A U.S. Hazmat Storage locker can be easily implemented into any work-site without interrupting delicate workflow operations. These buildings would therefore serve as an isolated and insulated temporary storage facility for hazardous waste. Each chemical storage locker offers an array of safety options to prevent environmental contamination. An innovative spill sump containment system allows spills and leaks to pass through steel grated flooring. The chemicals simply spill into the sump and are removed at your convenience.
