What are hazard class and hazard categories?

What are hazard class and hazard categories?

In high school science class, you probably learned about biodiversity and for the sake of easy identification, classification, and grouping of animals. Biologists group similar animals in the same categories to document the full range of life on our planet. While it sounds overly complicated it’s a streamlined process based on clarity and serves as a quick reference guide that can be easily used in the field. Heavy industry experts have devised a similar system that is also based on ease of access and logic. Instead of feathers or gills, scientists group workplace chemical compounds based on properties and the hazards or dangers they pose. Chemical classification can be tricky due to the foreign sounding terminology. It is our honor to serve you and help explain some of these complicated terms and available safety options, so you can focus on more pressing matters at the office.

What are hazards groups?

Hazard groups are just another way of classifying common, and in some cases, dangerous chemical compounds. Physical hazards groups are organized on the basis of physical or chemical traits. Common examples of this classification would be flammability or reactivity and even oxidization. At the other end of the spectrum, health hazard groups classify chemicals on the detrimental capacity of each chemical. For example, chemicals that can cause on the job breathing problems are grouped accordingly. Chemicals that could leave your skin in splotchy red patches are also paired for the same reason.

What is a hazard class?

Hazard classes are also a way of grouping together items that have similar properties. Common hazard classes include flammable gasses, flammable liquids, and organic peroxides.

Secondary Spill Containment for Flammable Chemicals

At U.S Hazmat Storage, we know that accidents and spills can still happen, regardless of the amount of caution heeded. If a spill does take place, you can relax knowing that our integrated storage sump will act as the safety net you need to know that the spill be contained and confined to a limited space. Storage fuels and oils can be costly, so we know every drop counts and spills must be contained to the storage area.

Properly storing flammable chemicals

Our custom chemical storage units come with four-hour rated fire protection. Check out our FireSAFE 4X and FireSafe 2X storage units. These steel-welded lockers allow you to separate and isolate hazards by grouping. These industry-leading units also remove the threat of contamination, so you don’t have to worry about your worksite’s safety rating being compromised.
